The Fog

Ain't it foggy outside
All the planes have been grounded
Ain't the fire inside
Let's all go stand around it
Funny, I've been there
And you've been here
And we ain't had no time to drink that beer..

Travelling everyday from home to Naga City and back never ceases to amaze me. The morning breeze in my face always feels a refreshing touch of nature especially during this time of year. The chilling wind blowing right in my face while running even at a measly 60kph feels really good. The view of Mt. Isarog form its base is a majestic site in the morning.

Today is no exemption; it is even one for the record-at least for me. Fog embraced almost the entire areas at the foot of the Mountain. The fog was so massive in nature that it engulfed Naga City and nearby Pili which temporarily grounded the operation of Cebu Pacific and other carriers.

Clad in my second hand jacket and a china-made visor, the outfit is no match for the extreme morning chill and precipitation brought about by the fog. I was half-soaked when I reached Naga.

I was humming the Sandman song by America in my one hour motorcycle journey while in the middle of seemingly endless great black fog. If not for the deadlines, today indeed is one of the best times to drink a beer. But I’ll save it for tomorrow.

Ain't the years gone by fast
I suppose you have missed them
And I almost forgot to ask
Did you hear of my enlistment?

What we do in life, echoes in eternity.

Jennifer’s Kababayan Hotel: A Review

Finding an affordable yet luxurious hotel at Legazpi City might take you a little far from downtown. Resting in the hillside of quiet suburb is the Jennifer’s Kababayan Hotel along J. Esteves Street of Guevarra Subdivision.

You make take the jeepney ride from Metro Mall or simply ride a tricycle to get to this place. I must warn you though that tricycle fares in this part of the province is so expensive compared with that of Naga City.

The Administrative and Academic Staff of STI Naga found this place perfect for their 2-day Planning Session. Away from the processes and worries of our daily operations, the personnel’s took time to evaluate their departments and formulate strategies and tactics for the succeeding year. Plans that are aligned with the goals of the Organization for greater sustainability were drawn and each were asked for commitment.

Back at the venue, the hotel is complete with leisure amenities from swimming pool to function halls that can accommodate 20 – 100 persons. They are also serving wide variety of cuisines to choose from. Wi-fi connection is also available for people always on the go. LCD projector is available upon request for meeting and seminars.

The rooms are spacious and their twin-sharing rooms can accommodate as many as six persons without any significant decline in air-conditioning power. Did I mention that their hot and cold shower is one for the books? You can make your morning coffee out of the hot shower!

Few of the downsides of this hotel is their TV reception. The monitors are big but pictures are poor. No service elevator available for occupants of the top floors.

Inside the Mind of a Basketball Coach

It was a cold and rainy Saturday morning in Bicol, a good time to do extended stretching in bed but I need to let the craving pass to catch a rare basketball event in Naga happening at 9 in the morning. No, it’s not a basketball game but a basketball talk.

Prominent movers of National Collegiate Basketball will be holding a Basketball Coaches Workshop at the Ateneo de Naga University to be followed by a sports clinic at the Naga City Gymnasium. This event is scheduled for one day only and this opportunity is too good to ignore.

Despite being early at the Integrated Terminal, I was still late to catch majority of Coach Noli Ayo’s presentation about the current sports culture in Bicol. Commuter Vans are normally not at their usual speed standard during Saturdays, I checked-in quarter past nine at the Arrupe Convention Center of Ateneo where the workshop is being held. I was greeted by Don Razon, the coach of STI Naga Basketball Team, who was waiting for me to arrive.

Following coach Ayo’s presentation is a talk given by Dr. Raul “George” Canlas, the Executive Director of the Moro Lorenzo Sports Medicine Unit, on Sports Injuries and Hydration. Dr. Canlas’ experience in local and international basketball campaigns has earned him a spot in the Medical Oversight Team composed of other top-notched sports doctors from around the world in the recently concluded Olympics held in China.

Though some part of his presentation showed players twisting their elbows, feet and a shovel to the face, it was presented to give an impact on the importance of re-hydration and proper conditioning to avoid and or minimize any sports injuries.

The Assistant Coach of the Ateneo Blue Eagles, Coach Sandy Arespacochaga was the third and final resource speaker for the morning. Being a basketball player himself, a Blue Eagle Varsity and an assistant coach for a very long time, Coach Sandy has a lot in his basketball arsenals that he gamely shared with the coaches. His talked centered on how to create a solid basketball program. Basic to complex tips on basketball programs to coaching was part of his agenda.
Five things I learned from him are the Five Things a Champion Basketball Team have. 1. A Champion basketball team shoots more free throws over their opponents. Since it’s a free shot, it is a mortal sin not to have free throws in a single game. 2. A Champion basketball team rebounds better than any of its opponents. Both for defensive and offensive rebounds, champion team never give more rebounding opportunity for their enemies. More rebounds mean more chances for field goals. 3. Shooting more points is not the main concern of a champion teams, it is having a higher field goal percentage that their competitors. 4. Champion teams have fewer turnovers than their competitors. 5. Champion teams don’t give easy basket for their opponents; they have to earn it the hard way.

It was a brilliant effort for Coach Noli Ayo, the Athletics Director of the Ateneo de Naga University, to have invited such high-profile guests to talk about basketball, a sports we Bicolanos love more than ourselves. His effort of uniting Bicolanos in the name of sports is one noble cause that is worth pursuing and sharing. Sports, just like life, is a shared experience collective experience. We need each other to win and survive.

Pretty sure basketball aficionados who were at the event went home with better knowledge and appreciation of the game. A game that can and has transcended cultural barriers. A game we will never get tired playing.

Tata Flores Cup Opening moved to November 8

To give participating teams more time to prepare and be strongly competitive, the organizers of the Manuel “Tata” Flores Cup have decided to move the opening ceremonies of the basketball tournament on November 8, 2008.

Given the eleven day extension, teams can now have more time to practice and execute their plays better. The extension is also a welcome announcement to most of the teams for they can have more time scouting their opponents and schedule tune-up games with the rest of the competing teams.

With this move, STI Naga is set to continue with its practices and teambuilding activities to further prepare for the league opening. Daily practices at the Ateneo de Naga University Covered Courts are being done by the basketball team together with teambuilding activities scheduled every Saturday at the school.

The extension not only allows the team to engage in more physical conditioning and psycho-social trainings, but this also gives enough time for the members of the team to jell together and be perfectly ready in time for its first game against Philippine Computer Foundation College (PCFC) on November 8, 2008 at the Naga City Gym.

Team Captain Lowell Jeff Palmiano (DCET) and Assistant Team Captain Frederick Suarez (HRS) lead the starting line-up of STI Naga Basketball Varsity together with Alden Fabricante (DIT) at the backcourt, Mark Anthony Francisco (DIT) and Eric Pardiñas (HRS) in the middle.

Competing the team are Lamingu Ontobon (DCET), Jay Ar Benitez (HRS), Dean Cañaberal (HRS), Manuel Luis Osea (DCET), Ronel Brutas (HRS), Christian Nimo (DCET), Cecilio Yabut (HRS), Jason Constantino (DIT), Ron Michael Garduque (DCET) and Peredo Gimeno (DCET).

HRS students at Regent Hotel

Twenty-seven Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) students of STI Naga underwent a two-day and one-night Stay and Learn Session at one of Naga City’s premiere hotel, The Regent Hotel.

Fresh from their Final Examination last Saturday, the HRS students eagerly attended the learning program at Regent Hotel which started morning of Sunday and culminated in the afternoon of the following day. This program is part of the continuing thrust of STI Naga in providing their students with a well-rounded learning approach through real life immersion and first hand industry experience.

The Learn and Stay Program focused on giving the students an actual hands-on experience on the business process of the different facets of a hotel. Series of lectures and on-the-spot trainings on Front Office Services, Housekeeping, and Night Shift Hotel Operation are among the highlights of the program.

A pre-assessment test for Housekeeping and Front Office Services were also administered by the hotel personnel’s to provide students better understanding and control of their comprehension on hospitality services. This pre-assessment exercise will be of great value to the students when they take the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) National Certification (NC) exam this year.

To have a better feel of the hotel operation both as a learning student and as a guest, the students were also treated to feast on sumptuous delicacies and cuisine prepared by the resident chef of the hotel. To add more excitement to the experience, students also got the chance to spend the entire night at the luxurious hotel suite.

With the success of the program, HRS students are again anticipating another industry immersion activity that would probably bring them to the heart of hospitality business. An educational trip to Manila next year is being considered by their instructor to give them a better appreciation and understanding of the industry. An industry they would be running in the future.

2nd Manuel “Tata” Flores Cup Kicks-off with a Radio Tour

With only six days before the opening ceremonies of the most anticipated 2nd Manuel “Tata” Flores Cup, the coaches of the competing schools came in full-force to the scheduled radio tour at RMN-DWNX in the program of Jo Osabal.

Headed by Coach Noli Ayo of the Ateneo de Naga University Golden Knights, the radio tour opened with him giving a backgrounder of the league. Named after the late great City Councilor Manuel “Tata” Flores, the league was first organized to bring sports, particularly basketball, closer to students and schools who cannot yet participate in the great inter-collegiate league of the city. The concept of a developmental league from where schools can hone future talents for bigger sporting arena was the primary concept in the formation of this organization. Fully supported by the late councilman, who was also very instrumental in promoting sports development in the city and the region in general, the organizers decided to pay tribute to the man by naming the tournament in his honor.

Coaches from Ateneo Golden Knights Team B, Mariners Polytechnic Colleges Baras and Panganiban, Ateneo High School, Philippine Computer Foundation College, St. Joseph School and STI Naga took turns in promoting the event which is set to open on October 28, 2008 at the Naga City Gymnasium.

The Manuel “Tata” Flores Cup is also being supported by the Naga City Government under the leadership of Mayor Jesse M. Robredo and the Samahang Baskeball ng Pilipinas (SBP).

San Sebastian Cavite Captures NAASCU Cage Title

San Sebastian College Recoletos de Cavite put on an overwhelming display to oust defending champion STI College, 86-77, to win the 8th NAASCU basketball title at the Makati Coliseum.

The Baycats leaned on Most Valuable Player Kris Lucernas, Mythical 10 members Ray Alcasabas and Oliver Villareal and reserve big man Mark Basa to lead the team to its first-ever title since joining the league two years ago.

Lucernas led SSCR-C with 19 points while Alcasabas added 18 as they won the last two games of the series after suffering a heartbreaking 75-72 defeat to the Olympians in Game 1.

“Determined talaga ang mga players at talagang pinaghirapan nila itong championship,” said San Sebastian head coach Egay Macaraya, who has been the team’s mentor since 2001.

Basa scored 16 points while Villareal added 12 markers as the Baycats, who has relied mostly on its outside shooting and run-and-gun system, erupted in the second half after a tight match through the first two quarters.

William Vasallo led STI with 21 points while Mythical Five member Ramon Mabayo made 17 markers. Arnold Danganan added 14 points as the Vic Ycasiano-coached squad failed to join the five-peat University of Manila Hawks to win two straight titles.

The Cavite City-based actually trailed 49-43 midway through the third period after Norman Ihalas uncorked two consecutive triples but Basa made two quick threes to tie the game while Alcasabas finished off a huge 15-1 run with back-to-back treys for a 58-50 edge with 2:44 in the third.

STI had several opportunities to pull closer, with Mabayo hitting a free throw to trail by just three, 74-71, with 6:05 to go in the game. But Alcasabas drove past two defenders for a layup while Lucernas scored on a putback that virtually put the game away, 80-73, with 2:27 left on the clock.

“Ang disadvantage namin against STI is yung experience nila but I think mas preparado kami kahit champion team sila.” said Macaraya, whose team composed mainly of youngsters after the team lost several players due to a new league rule that lowered the maximum age limit to 23 years old.

The championship marked a rough road for the Baycats after almost being expelled from the league in its first season in 2006 when Macaraya was suspended for an incident with an opposing player before losing to STI by a blowout in last year's final four.

Aside from its first championship, the Baycats also gained an outright berth to the Sweet 16 of next month’s Philippine Collegiate Championships that will compose of teams from the UAAP, NCAA and the CESAFI, among others.

Lucernas scored the last seven in a 10-0 blast in between the first and second periods as San Sebastian grabbed a 24-19 lead before taking its biggest lead of the half at 29-22 on a drive by Alcasabas.

STI managed to tie the game at 33-33 on five straight points by Mabayo only to see Lucernas connecting on a triple with six seconds left that gave the Baycats the lead at halftime.

Ihalas scored 12 points for the Olympians but saw Darryl Mendoza and Jay Aransazo combining for just eight points after making 20 points each in Game 2 as STI lost their third in four straight finals appearances dating back to 2005.

Lucernas, teammate Jun Gracilla and Mabayo were joined in the Mythical Five by Lyceum of Subic Bay’s JC Collado and St Clare College of Caloocan’s Richmond Sibal while leading the Mythical 10 selection alongside Alcasabas, Danganan, Mendoza, Villareal and Lyceum’s LA Gapasin.

Macaraya captured Coach of the Year honors while St Clare’s Ariel Parinas, last year’s Juniors’ MVP, won the Rookie of the Year plum. Sibal was adjudged as the Defensive Player of the Year.

The league also awarded its statistical leaders with Collado as the scoring champion, Parinas as the King of the Boards, and Robby Zablan of AMA Computer University with the most number of assists.

STI Naga Uragon Challenge Day 3: Phoenix devours Grun Worms. Grabs Basketball Title.

When the clash subsided, the team hungrier for the crown emerged victorious.

Phoenix scored a historic come-from-behind 56-53 win over the Grun Worms to bag the Basketball Title in the on-going STI Naga Sportsfest dubbed “Uragon Challenge”.

The game seemed lopsided at the start with the Grun Worms erecting a 10-point lead in the first quarter courtesy of their breakout player Harold John Dela Cruz. He scored 6 successive baskets coming from perfect feeds executed by center Lowell Palmiano.

Early in the second quarter, Phoenix’s woes continues, their slotman Cecilio Yabut twisted his ankle on a bad landing and left the game with his team trailing by 8 points. However, his partner Eric Pardiñas refused to yield and continuously attack the basket which gave them the lead at half time.

The game and scoring became even more furious as the two teams traded baskets in the third quarter. Palmiano finally find his stride and scored at will on the inside which kept the Grun Worms afloat in the game.

In the closing minutes of the fourth quarter, Pardiñas took the scoring cudgels for the Phoenix. To add drama and excitement to the closing minutes of the game,
Cecilio Yabut came back in the game with 3 minutes remaining in the fourth period after spending the entire third quarter on the bench. His re-entry provided the necessary muscle in the inside for the Phoenix. The trio of Pardiñas, Yabut and Frederick Suarez came strong in dying seconds to ensure victory for their team.

The Blazer took the 3rd Place Title via game forfeiture as the Trojans failed to come up with the required starters.

In the Darts Game, the Stigmas proved to be too much for the opposing teams. Their entry in both division (men and women) swept their respective assignments to win the match.

After consolidating all the wins for each team, the Stigma was the run-away winner for the Over-All-Champion Award having collected the most championships and Runner-ups award in almost all events and division.

STI Naga Uragon Challenge Day 3: Lady Stigmas and Blue Tooth Kings rule Volleyball

Manilyn Custodio of the Stigma Team scored the winning strike to lift her team to a pulsating finish over archrival Blazers.

The highly charged game in the Women’s Volleyball Division Finals was the longest battle ever fought between the two-teams. Stigma took the first set of the match but the Blazers came back in the second set behind Emmarie Albo’s tenacious returns.

In the third period, the Stigma showed their championship form to handedly beat the Blazers but again the Blazers overcame a 3-point deficit to snatch the fourth period away from the Lady Stigmas and gave them a new set of life.

In the deciding period, Custodio took over and ensured the victory of her team.

In the Men’s Volleyball Division, the Blue Tooth towered over the Blazers. Andres Roman’s Cross-Court Shot specialty was the venom that spoiled the planned upset of the Blazers.

STI Naga Uragon Challenge Day 2: Phoenix and Grun Worms in Basketball Finals.

The battle is on.

Grun Worms and Phoenix’s Basketball five have completed the mission where their Volleyball counterparts have failed to do - that is to play in a championship game.

Unbeaten in the 2-game elimination round, Grun Worms and Phoenix fortify their finals clash by stopping their respective opponents in the semi-finals. Phoenix frustrated the Blazers 38-30, while Grun trounced the Trojans 47-36 in a game that saw players literally falling one-by-one because of cramps.

Phoenix will rely on the trio of Eric Pardiñas, Cecilio Yabut and Frederick Suarez in this championship battle while Grun Worms will be bannered by their formidable frontlines of Jar Ar Benitez, Lowell Palmiano and Mark Anthony Francisco.

Blazers and Trojans will wrestle for the runner-up trophy on Saturday afternoon after the Women’s Volley Finals at the Greenland Covered Court.

In the individual events, Greco Daclan of the Trojans overpowered Joel Sanchez of Stigma to win the Men’s Billiard crown while Ava Christine Cañeba of the Phoenix knocked Kathleen Jean Dela Cruz for the Women’s Billiard Title.

In the fight to protect the King and the Queen, Wilfredo Sangalang of Phoenix conquered the kingdom of Mark Anthony Buitre to win the Men’s Chess Kingdom. Over at the Women’s Chess Division, Katherine Sesmundo of Stigma Team overruled Marilou Ramirez of Phoenix to bag the title.

Precious Dionson of the Grun Team emerged victorious in the Women’s Badminton Division and Kevin Oraca of the Blazers secured the title for the Men’s Badminton challenge. The duo of Kevin Oraca and Josel Valdez of Blazers bagged the Mix Badminton Division trophy.

Other champions are as follows:
Rubiks Cube - Trojans
PC Games - Phoenix
Men’s Table Tennis - Grun
Women’s Table Tennis - Stigma
Mix Table Tennis - Stigma

Men and Women’s Darts will be played simultaneously with the Volley Championship games tomorrow at the Greenland Covered Court.

After the basketball semi-final round, Mark Anthony Francisco leads the scoring statistics with an average of 19.3 points-per-game. Closely behind him are Lowell Palmiano (15.0ppg), Eric Pardiñas (14.3ppg), Jason Constantino (14.0ppg), Manuel Luis Osea (12.5ppg) and Jar Ar Benitez (12.0ppg).

Complete basketball games result:
Elimination Round: Blue Tooth 45, Grun 72; Phoenix 35, Trojans 27; Blazers 42, Grun 57; Stigma 32, Phoenix 40; Blazers 37, Blue Tooth 35; Trojans 49, Stigma 29.

Semi-Finals: Phoenix 38, Blazers 30; Grun 48, Trojans 36.

NAASCU: San Sebastian Cavite Force Rubber Match With STI

San Sebastian College Recoletos-Cavite kept its title hopes alive by demolishing defending champion STI College, 95-75, in Game 2 of the 8th NAASCU men’s basketball finals at the Makati Coliseum.

Big man Kris Lucernas and guard Ray Alcasabas combined as the Baycats dismantled the Olympians with its outside shooting and run and gun system to force a rubber match for the title on Saturday at 2pm.

Lucernas finished with 24 points while the speedy Alcasabas uncorked four triples to tally 21 points as the Cavite City-based cagers are aiming to win its first-ever crown.

“The boys showed that they we want to win,” said SSCR-C head coach Egay Macaraya. “They just followed the system that I employed and hopefully we can continue the momentum for Game 3.”

The Baycats actually trailed 40-35 with four minutes left before Lucernas and Alcasabas combined for 12 points in a telling 16-2 run to grab a 51-42 lead at halftime.

In the third, San Sebastian poured it on with an 11-3 spurt as Lucernas drained two treys while PJ Escobal hit a triple for a 62-47 advantage at the 4:55 mark.

STI’s closest opportunity to rally was at 10 points, 69-59, on a layup by Jay Aransazo to end the third but Jun Gracilla gave Baste an 18 points lead twice on a three-pointer and a three-point play off Arnold Danganan with 4:16 left in the contest.

Daryl Mendoza and Aransazo led the Olympians with 20 points each while Ramon Mabayo had a quiet 13 points as they blew an opportunity to become just the second NAASCU team since the University of Manila Hawks to win back-to-back titles.

Gracilla and big man Mark Basa, meanwhile, contributed 17 points apiece for the Baycats.

Mabayo scored six of the Olympians last eight points to grab a 23-20 first quarter that saw Macaraya and counterpart Vic Ycasiano trading verbal barbs at each other after STI’s Oscar Crisostomo was assessed with a technical foul.

In a consolation match, Lyceum of Subic Bay snatched third place away from St Clare College of Caloocan with a hairline 89-88 win.

The Sharks relied on JC Collado's basket with 31.9 seconds that extended the lead to three while St Clare’s Aries Parinas missed a potential game-tying free throw when he missed his third attempt after being fouled from the three-point arc with 1.9 seconds left.

Lyceum of head coach Kerwin McCoy steered the team to a trophy in just its first season as member as LA Gapasin scored 16 points while Aron Pellido added 15 markers.

Raymond Sibal led the Saints in a losing cause with 26 points while Parinas added 23.

STI Naga Uragon Challenge Day 1: Blazers, Blue Tooth and Stigma Dominate Volleyball Games.

The stage is finally set for the Volleyball finals. The coming Saturday morning will be blazingly hot as the Blazer's Men and Women Volleyball Team found their way to the Volley finals through the backdoor by beating their opponents in the Semis' do-or-die match this afternoon.

Earlier in the day, Blue Tooth’s Men Volleyball Team and Stigma’s Women Volleyball Team swept their respective games to gain an outright finals slot carrying with them a twice-to-beat advantage over their opponents.

Grun routed the Phoenix in the third game. Blue overpowered Blazers in the fourth game. Blazer bounced back by beating the Trojans in the fifth game. Stigma trumped the Phoenix in the sixth game. Blue Tooth continued their winning ways by crushing the Grun Team in the seventh game. Blazers scored their second win by routing the Phoenix in the third game. Stigma’s winning ways continued by overpowering the Trojans in the fourth game. Blue Tooth bounced back in the fifth game by over throwing the Trojans. In the sixth game, Grun Team found their rythmn and trounced the Phoenix and set-up a battle with Blue Tooth whom they trashed in the succeeding game. The battle for the final slot was fierce between the Grun Team and the Blazers. A deciding nail biter game was forced by the Grun Team before crumbling in the last canto.

Bartending: A fast growing industry for our HRS students

There are hundreds of drinks availabe in a bar and there are hundred ways of serving them.

To familiarize our students with the countless ways of bartending and provide alternative learning venues for our Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) students, the senior students of STI Naga’s HRS class of 2009 together with their Instructor, Ms. Sandra Bueza, conducted a Comprehensive Bartending Seminar last September 27, 2008 at STI Naga.

HRS students came in full-force the whole day excited to witness the presentations and demonstration being done by the invited speakers who are active movers in the local hospitality industry.

The seminar begun with the School Administrator encouraging the students to initiate more activities of the same nature. He even offered the possibility of having activities outside the school, more so, outside the city. This is being done in the conviction that the most important part of learning happens in the actual immersion of the students in the industry. Real life education is witnessing first hand the workers and processes of the industry.

The first speaker for the day, Ms. Josephine P. Primavera, is an expert in the hospitality and restaurant services industry. She has been with the industry for almost a decade now. She holds the distinction of being one of the accreditors of Hospitality Services Programs in the Region. She talked about the ins and outs of bartending and presented the manpower demand in this field both locally and abroad.

In the afternoon, two more speakers followed suit. Mabeth Apring, a resident bartender of Lolo’s Bar, and Don Adolfo, now working in Rockwell Makati, flashed their skills in bartending by doing various cocktail mixing and flair bartending exhibitions in front of the students.

Flair bartending is the act of flipping, spinning, throwing, balancing, catching bottles, drinks, and various bar tools all while making cocktails. Flair bartending involves highly technical pours and cuts that ensure accuracy and no spillage while performing various tricks and moves. Their world-class flair bartending skills really inspired the students to make good in their craft this early.

Tom Cruise made bartending looked cool in his movie 1988 "Cocktail" . Now it's time for the real guys, out STI HRS students to take centerstage. Bartending, which includes bottle flipping and juggling glasses is fast emerging as a career choice with the increase in demand for bartenders both here and abroad.

This 'high spirited' vocation was not considered a very civilised profession until recently. "Bartending was looked down as a career choice. But with the pub and cocktail culture picking up, bartenders are in demand and it is picking up as a career among the youth," says Sandeep Verma, who runs the Institute of Bar Operations and Management, a training institute for bartenders.
