Bartending: A fast growing industry for our HRS students

There are hundreds of drinks availabe in a bar and there are hundred ways of serving them.

To familiarize our students with the countless ways of bartending and provide alternative learning venues for our Hospitality and Restaurant Services (HRS) students, the senior students of STI Naga’s HRS class of 2009 together with their Instructor, Ms. Sandra Bueza, conducted a Comprehensive Bartending Seminar last September 27, 2008 at STI Naga.

HRS students came in full-force the whole day excited to witness the presentations and demonstration being done by the invited speakers who are active movers in the local hospitality industry.

The seminar begun with the School Administrator encouraging the students to initiate more activities of the same nature. He even offered the possibility of having activities outside the school, more so, outside the city. This is being done in the conviction that the most important part of learning happens in the actual immersion of the students in the industry. Real life education is witnessing first hand the workers and processes of the industry.

The first speaker for the day, Ms. Josephine P. Primavera, is an expert in the hospitality and restaurant services industry. She has been with the industry for almost a decade now. She holds the distinction of being one of the accreditors of Hospitality Services Programs in the Region. She talked about the ins and outs of bartending and presented the manpower demand in this field both locally and abroad.

In the afternoon, two more speakers followed suit. Mabeth Apring, a resident bartender of Lolo’s Bar, and Don Adolfo, now working in Rockwell Makati, flashed their skills in bartending by doing various cocktail mixing and flair bartending exhibitions in front of the students.

Flair bartending is the act of flipping, spinning, throwing, balancing, catching bottles, drinks, and various bar tools all while making cocktails. Flair bartending involves highly technical pours and cuts that ensure accuracy and no spillage while performing various tricks and moves. Their world-class flair bartending skills really inspired the students to make good in their craft this early.

Tom Cruise made bartending looked cool in his movie 1988 "Cocktail" . Now it's time for the real guys, out STI HRS students to take centerstage. Bartending, which includes bottle flipping and juggling glasses is fast emerging as a career choice with the increase in demand for bartenders both here and abroad.

This 'high spirited' vocation was not considered a very civilised profession until recently. "Bartending was looked down as a career choice. But with the pub and cocktail culture picking up, bartenders are in demand and it is picking up as a career among the youth," says Sandeep Verma, who runs the Institute of Bar Operations and Management, a training institute for bartenders.

STI Olympians back in the Finals!

“We won by 10 points. Best of 3 against San Sebastian starts on Tuesday” was the text message sent by SVP for SOG Resty Bundoc yesterday. The SMS was more than enough for us to share the same jubilation and ecstasy of Ateneo and La Salle when they reached the UAAP season 71 Finals.

With the UAAP finals hype over, collegiate basketball community is set to experience again another exciting game in the 8th season of the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) finals. A battle between mystic and mortals, a war between the defending champion Olympians and the Baycats.

STI College Olympians defeated Lyceum University yesterday at the Makati Coliseum to fortify its bid to retain the NAASCU crown. The Olympians will try to defend the NAASCU title against San Sebastian College - Recoletos de Cavite (SSC-R Baycats) on Tuesday.

Coming from a slow start, the Olympians gained it peak form in the middle of the tournament securing the 2nd spot of the standing in the end of the 1st round of eliminations and grabbing the solo lead over San Sebastian College Baycats in the end of the second round.

Entering the Final four with a twice-to-beat advantage, the Olympians crushed Lyceum University in one game to gain the golden ticket and play in the NAASCU Finals for the fourth consecutive year. San Sebastian College Baycats trumped Saint Claire College Saints and set a date with the Olympians in the finals.

Since the leagues’ formation in 2001, University of Manila (UM) held the record of 5-year consecutive championship titles. This is also the fourth consecutive finals stint of the Olympians since 2005. The Olympians bowed to the UM Hawks on that year to finish first place. In 2006, the AMA Titans defeated STI Olympians in a grueling 3rd game match. Last year, the Olympians forced a rematch with UM Hawks and the Olympians swept the series in a convincing fashion.

Consistently leading the Olympians is two time Mythical five member and San Mig Coffee forward Ramon Mabayo together with bullstrong forward Michael Cabangon, defensive specialist Daryl Mendoza, Inter STI MVP William Vasallo and speedy point guard Alvin Macabasco. The Olympians is being handled by Vic Ycasiano.

STI Naga joins the Peñafrancia Festival

Thanks God its September! This time of year, all roads lead to Naga City for the Annual Peñafrancia Festival, a religious celebration in honor of the Patroness of Bicolandia, our Ina (Mother), Our Lady of Peñafrancia.

Thousand of devotees from all over the country (and even from overseas) trooped to the Basilica Shrine to pay homage to our Ina. This year’s celebration is anchored on renewing our faith through our devotion to our Ina. Hourly masses are being celebrated each day at the Basilica Shrine and the Metropolitan Cathedral to accommodate the faithful in their devotion.

Among the highlights in this years’ celebration was the transfer of our Ina from the Basilica Shrine to the Metropolitan Cathedral. Called “Traslacion Procession”, this event officially signals the start of the weeklong celebration. Done every second Friday of September, the procession was participated by STI students as well as students from other Colleges and Universities in the Region. The procession passes through Magsaysay Avenue, Peñafrancia Avenue and then around Quense Martirez Plaza going straight to the Metropolitan Cathedral. A Pontifical Mass was also celebrated as soon as the Image of Our Ina reaches the Cathedral.

After eight days of stay at the Metropolitan Cathedral, Our Ina is again transferred back to the Basilica Shrine, this time through a “Fluvial Procession” held at the Naga River. The Fluvial Procession is highlighted by hundreds of “bangkeros” (boatmen) pulling the “pagoda” all by sheer physical strengths using their paddles. STI Naga has commissioned 3 boats with 14 bangkeros each to join the procession in our commitment and collective faith to Our Ina.

The annual Peñafrancia Celebration has indeed transcend the faith of the devotees. Men, women and children in the streets did not mind the scorching heat of the sun waiting for the procession to get by. They literally have to squeeze themselves in between the crowd just to get a glimpse of our Ina and wave their handkerchief as the Image of the Virgin Mother passes-on.

Among other events of the weeklong Peñafrancia Festival was the Civic and Voyadores Parade held September 18, 2008 and followed the following day by the Military Parade. These parades draw thousands of participants from all over the Region. High School and College students take center stage as they compete to be the best marching corps in Bicol. Both parades were about ten (10) hours long but the crowd in the streets never thins. All of them are rooting for their respective contingents to win the coveted prize.

Education for Real Life: Graduation Message

Almost six months ago I came to know some - if not most of you NOT from the confides of our Institution but from a less expected external resource person, and he is Police Officer II Bongon of Naga City’s Elite Force together with reporters from Bombo Radyo, DWAR, DWNX, and some others stations I can barely recall. Some may have left that incident at the corners of their minds but it remained lucid to me until this day, NOT because it has brought me sleepless nights but rather it made me appreciate more our National Bird, the Philippine EAGLE, or is it EAGLES? And that makes this batch so special for me.

The Philippine Eagle is the 2nd largest bird on the planet. And over the decade, this distinction had made our own eagle unique and special. The challenge of making a distinction for yourself like the eagle begun when you were born and continues until the moment you took your diplomas and it doesn’t end there. Today you have just conquered STI, tomorrow I’d like you to strive for the world. You have grown to be your own man and woman, willing to take risks and willing to stand for what you believe is right. May the spirit of the Eagle guide you in your quest to define your identity and your individuality.

Today I bid you Godspeed and urge you to dedicate yourselves to continue working for your aspirations and for that brighter future of your dreams. Although the period of your formal education may have ended, your education certainly has not. Education is at the core of life. Life is a journey of discovery and education.

Be open to the lessons of the world around you. Every person you encounter is potentially a teacher. For 2-years I’m sure Chief had taught you the value of self-discipline. Every situation is potentially a subject. This may vary in meaning for some may say every subject is a potential situation to copy from my classmates. Accord every person and each situation with your full attention, and you will discover new insights in familiar situations. From insights gleaned from the great classroom that is the world, you will discover aspects of yourself that have been here to fore hidden from you.

Do not be afraid to take prudent risks. Take the less traveled road. There are no recitations, quizzes, homework, long tests, promissory notes, no id no entry, and departmental exams in the classroom of life. In the end, the verdict on your life will be between you and the divine.

In behalf of the faculty, staff and administration, permit me to thank your parents for the trust they have reposed in all of us at STI NAGA. They have sacrificed much to provide you with opportunities they themselves may not have had. Always give them the honor they deserve.

Graduates, STI NAGA will always be your second home. Do not hesitate to visit the school or our website if you can manage the time. Write if you can. You have your STI email with you and that’s yours eternally. PROMISE we’ll also keep in touch – especially for few who may still have to pay their Tuition Fee. See how succeeding graduating classes build on the paths you have blazed in the same way that the class of 2008 had built on the trails left by past graduates.

Fly high like an Eagle! Go and show the world the meaning of Education for Real Life.

Maraming salamat po at Mabuhay kayong lahat!
