STI Olympians back in the Finals!

“We won by 10 points. Best of 3 against San Sebastian starts on Tuesday” was the text message sent by SVP for SOG Resty Bundoc yesterday. The SMS was more than enough for us to share the same jubilation and ecstasy of Ateneo and La Salle when they reached the UAAP season 71 Finals.

With the UAAP finals hype over, collegiate basketball community is set to experience again another exciting game in the 8th season of the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) finals. A battle between mystic and mortals, a war between the defending champion Olympians and the Baycats.

STI College Olympians defeated Lyceum University yesterday at the Makati Coliseum to fortify its bid to retain the NAASCU crown. The Olympians will try to defend the NAASCU title against San Sebastian College - Recoletos de Cavite (SSC-R Baycats) on Tuesday.

Coming from a slow start, the Olympians gained it peak form in the middle of the tournament securing the 2nd spot of the standing in the end of the 1st round of eliminations and grabbing the solo lead over San Sebastian College Baycats in the end of the second round.

Entering the Final four with a twice-to-beat advantage, the Olympians crushed Lyceum University in one game to gain the golden ticket and play in the NAASCU Finals for the fourth consecutive year. San Sebastian College Baycats trumped Saint Claire College Saints and set a date with the Olympians in the finals.

Since the leagues’ formation in 2001, University of Manila (UM) held the record of 5-year consecutive championship titles. This is also the fourth consecutive finals stint of the Olympians since 2005. The Olympians bowed to the UM Hawks on that year to finish first place. In 2006, the AMA Titans defeated STI Olympians in a grueling 3rd game match. Last year, the Olympians forced a rematch with UM Hawks and the Olympians swept the series in a convincing fashion.

Consistently leading the Olympians is two time Mythical five member and San Mig Coffee forward Ramon Mabayo together with bullstrong forward Michael Cabangon, defensive specialist Daryl Mendoza, Inter STI MVP William Vasallo and speedy point guard Alvin Macabasco. The Olympians is being handled by Vic Ycasiano.
