Blame it on the age, the muscle, the lift, the delayed reaction, the velocity of the game, the youthful sparks of the opponents, lady luck, referees but myself. It’s sad but I have to honestly and humbly admit it, this is not the way I played basketball 10 years ago as I watched our opponents left us flatfooted most of the times. Having scored couple of baskets, grabbed some rebounds, dished few assists and made just a single free throw out of the four attempts was a lowly consolation for the anguish of running up and down the court, gasping for every breath trying to defend the untiring varsity selection of STI College Naga and getting back in formation for our offensive set.
We were up against a mighty varsity selection team of STI for an exhibition basketball game in the opening ceremonies of our 2010 Sports Festival. The days of half-serious and half-attended practices were all intended to have a “respectable” showing in today's exhibition game. The pride in the youthful athletes inside of us refuses to yield to the elderly body that we now have. The dignity of winning a game in front of our home crowd and getting the better of our youthful counterparts is a dream still worth pursuing. Sad enough, after the first quarter bell rung, we all have to wake up to the reality of letting go of that elusive dream.
The united administrative staff and faculty members basketball team which I am part of have a decent chance of winning the game if it was played on a half court set. Defensively, we can contain the opponents’ scorers with our "clever" (read: gulang)defense set-up and we can attempt for a high percentage shots at will against the opponents’ defensive pattern, but we have NEVER contained their fastbreak attacks. We were left watching them from our front court as Lowell Palmiano, their Team Captain, threw baseball pitches to their running guards who in turn made scoring a basket looked so easy with no one from our team defending them.
Yes, we had several attempts on high percentage shots but the ball just won’t find the bottom of the net. Engr. Rey Kalaw would muscle (literally) himself inside the shaded lane for a better angle but the ball would just kiss the rim and bounce out. Engr. Jay Garchitorena’s money-making set shots would just rattle the rim but never fall down for a score. At times I was even forced to use the glass for a much precise bank shot but just the same, the ball would say hello to the rim but never say hi to the bottom of the basket.
Interestingly, the game today made me noticed a slight change in my standard physical and health restraints. Not once in any part of the game did I turn to my best friend, my asthma inhaler medication, to clear my air passage and stabilize my breathing. The practices we had and probably the adrenalin of the game kept my system hyped and that my entire bodily systems are again in sync to help me achieve the goal in mind, to be tough and competitive in the game that I so dearly adore. For the love of the game, I don’t mind losing. I’ll keep playing still until I find the ways to win again. “Winners are not born overnight”, that’s part of the line I delivered myself during the mandatory opening speech. To be a winner entails a certain degree of persistence, discipline and practice.

FIBA World Championship Day One Upset
From the get go, the fifteenth seed (15th) Team France meant serious business and that they are out to dismantle the highly touted and third seed (3rd) Team Spain. France typified this intention in the first quarter with 8:49 left in the clock and as Marc Gasol (the starting Center) of Spain is off for an easy fast break slam, then out of nowhere Nicolas Batum (starting Small Forward) of France blocked Gasol’s shot and gained ball possession. The block shot was the first of the 5 team block shots of France against none of Spain. France showed Spain they can play defense and great team basketball with less NBA superstars in their lineup. France won the game 72-66 and scored the biggest opening day upset at the FIBA World Championship being held at Turkey.
France has the potential to be a powerhouse team in this league but the absence of NBA superstars like Tony Parker (San Antonio Sours), Joakim Noah (Chicago Bulls), Mikael Pietrus (Orlando Magic), Ronny Turiaf (New York Knick) and Rodrigue Beaubois (Dallas Mavericks) made them a doubtful title contender, thus they were placed as the fifteenth seed in the FIBA World Rankings this year. Aggravating the absence of these top-notch French players is the fact that the team has to contend itself with younger players at the backcourt who will be tasked to distribute the ball. By younger players I mean players with less exposure and experience in International games.
Behind the rankings and the absence of NBA players in the team, Team France Head Coach Vincent Collet has other things in mind. For sure he is aware of his team’s strengths more so of its weaknesses, thus, he tactically used both to his teams’ greater advantage. Having youth in his line up doesn't just mean they are inexperienced, this also means the team is more athletic, hungry and determined to prove their worth in the international arena. Unlike other established NBA superstars who might not feel the pride and value of patriotism in basketball because of their “commitment” to their NBA teams and the perks that goes with it, these young French ballers are beaming with enthusiasm, pride and hope not just for their country much more for their basketball career.
Enthusiasm, determination and pride are the words that best describe the game between France and Spain. Trailing majority of the quarters, France played exceptional team basketball and tremendous phasing by consistently coming back and keeping the margins of the game manageable. The NBA experience of forward Boris Diaw and young guard Yannick Bokolo lead the team in the assist department as they managed to collate 15 team dimes against the 9 of Spain. France suffocating defense also took the toll against Spain as France allowed their opponents to a 36.4% Field Goal Percentage (35.5% from the 2-point area) and 53.1% from the foul line.
In the end, enthusiasm, determination and pride of the French took the center stage. Spain’s NBA superstar-laden line-up failed to match these three key fighting words of their French counterpart. The highly celebrated young and good-looking point guard of Spain, Ricky Rubio managed to pile-up only 3 assists, 3 Steals, 3 rebounds and 6 points in 29 minutes. Rubio and Juan Carlos Navarro, two guards who played with the most minutes in the game, but it was the latter who had better showing than the last. But their efforts failed to snatch the win out of the hungrier and more determined Frenchmen.
Joining France in Group D are the National Teams from Lithuania (Ranked No. 6), Lebanon (Ranked No. 24), Canada (Ranked No. 19), New Zealand (Ranked No. 13) and Spain (Ranked No. 2). Among these teams, New Zealand, Lithuania and Spain are Team France’s biggest threat to overcome and advance to the next round, but that is not to count out Lebanon who powered past Canada in the earlier game.

The Enchanting Enchanted Kingdom
About 18,000 STI students from all over the country trooped to Enchanted Kingdom last Friday for the 27th Anniversary Celebration of STI. Tourist buses of various sizes and origins clogged the spacious parking of the theme park, long lines at the four entrances amidst the scorching heat of the Friday sun each waiting for their turn to set foot at the park, students of all shapes, colors and sizes lingered the streets of the kingdom and an even longer queues of students at the entrance of each rides are the common sights one will notice on this historic day.
It is an amazing sight to see students wearing the same anniversary shirts and meeting fellow schoolmates from other parts of the country. The feeling of pride being part of an organization that is true to its vision not just in words but in deeds is the unique spirit that everyone shared without having the need to speak of it. Shades of yellow, blue, red and black colors dominated the color schemes of the day each having one and the same thematic message embedded in each color scheme, the theme of the celebration - “Citizen STI.”
What exactly is Citizen STI? Citizen STI is a character. A Citizen STI embodies attributes that foster social empowerment and national progress. From simple deeds to elaborate initiatives, Citizen STI strive to contribute positive actions that are beneficial to our country, essential for our community, worthwhile for our fellow citizens and valuable for ourselves. Citizen STI is an advocacy. As followers of this movement geared toward building a better nation for both present and future generations, we are encouraged to influence others with the same constructive ideals that we adhere to. In order to take this advocacy beyond our closest reach, every day we have to make a conscious effort to not merely lead, but lead with conviction and most importantly, lead by example.
Adding to the unspoken excitements and thrills of the celebration is the venue itself, the enchanting theme park at Sta. Rosa, Laguna, considered as one of the best in South East Asia which opened way back in 1995. The Grand Carousel at the Victoria Park just in front of the main gate greets incoming guests with what the park can offer beyond extraordinary. Moving forward to the Boulderville, one will be treated to a different era where Dinosaurs ruled the planet. This part of the park is designed for children who love prehistoric cartoon characters. And who would fail to notice the astonishing Spaceport Area where the giant Space Shuttle ride manifests its magnificent presence. Visitors who are thrilled by speed, height and 360 degrees turns in midair will surely keep begging for more!
It is my fourth time at Enchanted Kingdom already. The first was back in 2000, exactly 10 years ago, where I was part of the team from Taft Avenue in Manila who took part in the 17th Anniversary Celebration held at the kingdom. During those visits, it’s surprising, and I just realized it now, that I have never tried any of the theme’s exciting rides! Well, I would love to but the long lines and queues at the ride entrance took the patience in me. I’m not totally good at waiting, until now, so I kept myself busy with other attractions which required less waiting time. I have never tried the Space Shuttle but in due time I think it will come my way. I had experienced the “Space Shuttle Version” of Star City (a theme park in Pasay City) though years back. I remembered the feeling of adrenalin rush with a mixture of fear as the shuttle glided in midair then suddenly rushes back down in full speed and turns to make a 360 degrees maneuver! The ride was incredibly great but I had my body aching afterwards.
The enchanting Enchanted Kingdom hosted STI’s Anniversary Celebration once again. Just like the previous celebrations where the kingdom was the venue, the park never ceases to amaze the kids in all of us. We just don’t have enough time to experience all the rides and attractions that the park can offer but sure there’s always another time to look forward to and be back again. For the Cluster 9 Delegation, the Enchanted Kingdom was our motivation to give our best and have the bragging rights to represent Bicol Region in the National Competition. As expected, other delegations from the rest of the STI Schools around the country, who have also reached the National Finals, have in themselves their own bragging rights. From what we saw at the National Finals, our delegation, being the best in Bicol, is just not match (for now) with other delegations, especially those coming from the Greater Manila Area. They are on a different level now, but that will serve as a stronger motivation for us to climb their class and be one of them in years to come. And that will be very soon.
Our delegation picked number 1 in all performances. That means we will be performing first from among the seventeen other delegations. Performing first have its own shares of pros and cons, but that doesn’t matter for us. Our goal is to reach the National Finals and winning will just be a bonus. We didn’t get the bonus but we have accomplished our goal. Performing alongside the National Winners is an added accomplishment already each of us in the team will treasure. Today we have reached the finals, tomorrow, we will dream of bringing home the title. Until then, we need to face the monumental task of locally honing winning winners.
P.S.
I’d like to thank our coordinators for selflessly sharing their time and talents with our participants to the different events. The EK goal was achieved primarily because of your dedication and cooperation. Big THANKS also goes to our students left behind to catch the event on FB and other mediums due to the enormous expense of witnessing the event live. Thank you for believing we can reach our goal. Last, CONGRATULATIONS to our participants for giving your best and making us all in our local community proud. Winning is not just about bringing home the trophies; it’s also by being gracious in accepting that more has to be learned and losing will bring out the winners in us to fight the war another day and win the battle in God’s designated time.

Rediscovering the Hot Spring Capital of the Philippines
Approximately six hours away from Bicol going to Manila lies the Hot Spring Capital of the Philippines. The proud City of Calamba, Laguna, the birth place of JPR our National Hero. Among the best Hot Spring Resorts in Calamba are located mostly at Barangay Pansol where almost every corner has a private pool designed to satisfy the needs of the swimming public. Resorts from contemporary to modern designs abound at the area and almost all of the vacant lots along the highway are now being transformed into a resort.
The Hot Springs in Laguna they say has therapeutic healing powers as the fresh, clear and pure hot springs below the surface runs free from Mount Makiling. Residents need not excavate deep holes to find the root of the hot spring, the water is so abundant that hand digging (a figure of speech) can lead one to the purest hot springs of all. No wonder, the place is visited by tourists, particularly those from Manila, to escape the contaminated environment of highly urbanized places and experience the beauty of nature through the hot springs of Pansol.
Pansol has been our favorite getaway years ago when I was still in Manila. My friends Atty. Varela, Mau Banaag, Phen and the late Joey Aberilla have travelled this side of the country several times on weekends to recharge and veer away from the pressures of our daily office works. Since the place is just over an hour drive from Manila, this is the most accessible, convenient and beautiful place to unwind.
The Cluster 9 Team of STI Colleges Naga and Legazpi have chosen Pansol as our rendezvous before proceeding to Enchanted Kingdom for the 27th Anniversary Celebration of STI. Among the many resorts in the area, we have chosen to stay at the quiet suburbs of Solimar del Pansol and stayed at one of the coolest resorts of the village. Amenities such as billiards, videoke, and other utilities are provided for guests to better enjoy their stay.
Contingents and their coordinators frolicked at the pool all day long unmindful of the battle they have to face the following day. Today, we wanted to free our spirits, enjoy the hot spring experience and appreciate the beauty of nature. A short program was prepared after dinner to remind the contingents of our goal and the reason why we are here. As early as day one, we have set the goal and that is to reach the National Finals, now that we did, there’s only one task left tomorrow. Give it our best shot and enjoy the experience.

Major, Major.
There has been too much fuzz on the answer of Miss Philippines, Maria Venus Bayonito Raj during the interview segment in the recently concluded Miss Universe 2010 Beauty Pageant held at Las Vegas, Nevada. Asked by pageant judge William Baldwin, "What is one big mistake that you've made in your life and what did you do to make it right?" Venus Raj answered "You know what, Sir in my 22 years of existence I can say that there is nothing major major, I mean, problem that I have done in my life. Because I am very confident with my family, with the love that they are giving to me. So, thank you so much that I am here, thank you thank you so much." Is there something hilarious about the answer more so the question that lead to the answer? I say none and we should take the question and the answer in a major, major way.
First. Looking intently at the question of Mr. Baldwin, I would say that we (not just Venus Raj) should have seen it coming. The question consciously asked or not, is tied on the Philippine hostage drama which has just ended approximately 15 hours ago. The drama which has put the Philippines (our country) into an uncompromising and ridiculous stature is rooted on the supposed BIG MISTAKE done against the hostage taker. He even composed a sentence in this regard and posted it at the door of the bus.
Second. "What is one big mistake that you've made in your life and what did you do to make it right?" This question is not solely intended for Venus Raj. This is in fact addressed to ALL FILIPINOS around the globe. Mr. Baldwin has a unique way of conveying his message in the most subtle manner. As Filipinos and as one united country, we have done a major, major mistake in indirectly tolerating the carnage that caused the lives of eight (8) Hong Kong Nationals. No matter where we go as Filipinos, the burden of redeeming the mistake one Filipino has done is passed on to the shoulders of each of us. What is it that we can do to correct it? What would be our own personal answer to the question?
Third. The question sums up the stories behind the life story of Venus Raj in her quest for the Miss Philippines and the Miss Universe crown. She was dethroned months prior to the preparation of the Miss Universe pageant, a judgment that in itself is a big mistake that needs to be corrected not by Venus Raj but by the organizers of the Philippine Pageant. Did Venus Raj made a mistake by joining the Miss Philippines Pageant with her complicated nationality or did the organizers committed a blunder with the huge oversight? Has the mistake been corrected by re-instating Venus Raj as Miss Philippines?
Fourth. Did Venus Raj made a mistake by not answering the question according to the preference of the elites and the wannabees? Is there something as a wrong answer in an interview that asks about your personal preference? If a preference is wrong, then what on earth is acceptably right? This reminded me of an old friend that hides on the complicated issues in her life and refuses to accept what she really and truly feels. Just like Venus Raj, I can’t blame her, it’s her way of answering the question - and for that she deserves a slot in the Miss Universe next year.
Fifth. Behind the answer and the question, let us open our eyes. Fourth place finish for Miss Philippines, Venus Raj, was a MAJOR, MAJOR win! Not to mention that she is a true blooded Bicolana and that’s a major, major pride for all of us. Viva Bicolandia. Viva Bicolana. Questions?

Big Mistake!
"Big mistake to correct a big wrong decision." WTF does that mean? Then you’ll take Hong Kong Tourist as your hostages to explain the damn “sentence” for you? How the hell will they be able to understand you Former Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza? Big mistake for a lunatic cop! What a shame for our Manila’s Finest. 12 agonizing hours is just too much for these hostages!
My heart goes for the hostages and their families. They are supposed to be on their flight back to Hong Kong tonight when a lunatic Filipino cop took over their tourist bus and made them his human shield. I’m ashamed that a Filipino cop grabbed international attention today not by his good deeds but by his lunatic principle and BAD ENGLISH! Worst, whatever happened to your motto – “to serve and protect”?
Former Police Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza, a dismissed policeman armed with automatic rifle, seized a tourist bus in Manila Monday with 25 people aboard, mostly foreign tourists in a bid to demand reinstatement. Irony of all ironies, he chose to commander the bus at the Quirino Grandstand where President Noynoy Aquino took his oath of office and shouted his policy “Walang wang-wang, walang counterflow” referring to the abusive ways of people in authority, policemen as part of them!
Since when is a demand for reinstatement has been resolved by a hostage taking drama? What school did you take you BS Criminology and who is your history teacher Former Police Senior Inspector Rolando Mendoza? Most importantly, did you pass your Communication Arts 101? How did you get promoted and became a Senior Inspector? Do you know what an Officer and a Gentlemen means? You can never defend yourself now until eternity, but one thing is for sure to all of us who have witnessed your stupidity, in our very eyes, you have showed us who you really are in just 12 hours, you are a disgrace to Filipinos and Filipino Policemen!

Disney's Up and Date Night
For the nth time, I have been forcibly glued to my seat again and watch Disney’s UP with the kids. The movie has been playing over and over at Disney Channel Movie this week, and prior to that, the kids have been playing it over and over at the computer, just like a rollercoaster, they never get tired of the movie, proof is, they have memorized some lines and knew them exactly when to blurt it out in unison!
Disney’s Up is a movie for all ages. The adventures of Russell, Carl Fredricksen, Kevin and Dug are very well told from a perspective of an old man in search for adventure and a kid in search for his remaining “Assisting the elderly Badge”. A meeting of complicated and simple wishes in life that brought them to places they could only imagine and a friendship that transcends ages.
One of the most striking parts in the animated movie for me came in the part Ellie’s last message to Carl, “Thanks for the adventure. Now go have one of your own.” See Ellie and Carl have been childhood friends, got married, had happy times together even they didn’t have kids. They shared the same love and passion for adventure and dreamed of going to a place called “Paradise Falls”, a place they never knew really existed, a place they only saw in news reels. But as life would have, Ellie would give in to old age leaving Carl alone to pursue their adventure.
It was so touching in the end, that instead of giving Russel his “Assisting the elderly Badge”, Carl gave Russell “The Badge of Ellie”, in Carls own words in the pinning ceremonies, “Russell, for assisting the elderly and for performing above and beyond the call of duty, I would like to award you the honest honor I can bestow, the Ellie Badge..” The badge came in a form of a button pin but the pin symbolizes the dreams, the adventure and the lives lived by two people who looked at life as an adventure that needs to be explored.
With extra time left prior to doing my MIS project, I stumbled on the piles of DVDs I have but never had the chance of watching them due to my schedules. Today, I took time to pick one movie and Steve Carell and Tina Fey’s Date Nigth caught my attention. The movie is a story of a boring couple out of New Jersey who wanted a taste of adventure in one of their scheduled date nights. Turned out that the adventure they are about to get is more than what they have expected.
Steve Carell has how own unique way of bringing down the house. Wholesome, sleek and funny character rolled into one. His adventures and misadventures are something that’s tolerable even if you’ve seen them coming. He knows how to handle scenes and brings out the funny sides of things with his acting and natural expressions. This guy is one of the few characters and movie actors whom I feel safe of bringing the kids to the movie house without them (the kids) having to be treated with abusive languages and mature scenes.
Date Night is one fine movie for all ages too. The first is a story of life-long adventure, the second is a story of an overnight misadventures. Both are fun and both are creatively done. I have to mention, the cameo appearances of James Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Will I. Am, Ray Liotta and Mark Wahlberg added more premium to the story. Grab your copy of these movies and you’ll see what I mean, that is if you haven’t watched any of it yet.

I Am Prepared For The Worst.
27 years after his death, below is Ninoy Aquino’s (undelivered) arrival statement on August 21, 1983.
I have returned on my free will to join the ranks of those struggling to restore our rights and freedoms through nonviolence.
I seek no confrontation. I only pray and will strive for a genuine national reconciliation founded on justice.
I am prepared for the worst, and have decided against the advice of my mother, my spiritual adviser, many of my tested friends and a few of my most valued political mentors.
A death sentence awaits me. Two more subversion charges, both calling for death penalties, have been filed since I left three years ago and are now pending with the courts.
I could have opted to seek political asylum in America, but I feel it is my duty, as it is the duty of every Filipino, to suffer with his people especially in time of crisis.
I never sought nor have I been given assurances or promise of leniency by the regime. I return voluntarily armed only with a clear conscience and fortified in the faith that in the end justice will emerge triumphant.
According to Gandhi, the WILLING sacrifice of the innocent is the most powerful answer to insolent tyranny that has yet been conceived by God and man.
Three years ago when I left for an emergency heart bypass operation, I hoped and prayed that the rights and freedoms of our people would soon be restored, that living conditions would improve and that blood-letting would stop.
Rather than move forward, we have moved backward. The killings have increased, the economy has taken a turn for the worse and the human rights situation has deteriorated.
During the martial law period, the Supreme Court heard petitions for Habeas Corpus. It is most ironic, after martial law has allegedly been lifted, that the Supreme Court last April ruled it can no longer entertain petitions for Habeas Corpus for persons detained under a Presidential Commitment Order, which covers all so-called national security cases and which under present circumstances can cover almost anything.
The country is far advanced in her times of trouble. Economic, social and political problems bedevil the Filipino. These problems may be surmounted if we are united. But we can be united only if all the rights and freedoms enjoyed before September 21, 1972 are fully restored.
The Filipino asks for nothing more, but will surely accept nothing less, than all the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the 1935 Constitution — the most sacred legacies from the Founding Fathers.
Yes, the Filipino is patient, but there is a limit to his patience. Must we wait until that patience snaps?
The nation-wide rebellion is escalating and threatens to explode into a bloody revolution. There is a growing cadre of young Filipinos who have finally come to realize that freedom is never granted, it is taken. Must we relive the agonies and the blood-letting of the past that brought forth our Republic or can we sit down as brothers and sisters and discuss our differences with reason and goodwill?
I have often wondered how many disputes could have been settled easily had the disputants only dared to define their terms.
So as to leave no room for misunderstanding, I shall define my terms:
1. Six years ago, I was sentenced to die before a firing squad by a Military Tribunal whose jurisdiction I steadfastly refused to recognize. It is now time for the regime to decide. Order my IMMEDIATE EXECUTION OR SET ME FREE.
I was sentenced to die for allegedly being the leading communist leader. I am not a communist, never was and never will be.
2. National reconciliation and unity can be achieved but only with justice, including justice for our Muslim and Ifugao brothers. There can be no deal with a Dictator. No compromise with Dictatorship.
3. In a revolution there can really be no victors, only victims. We do not have to destroy in order to build.
4. Subversion stems from economic, social and political causes and will not be solved by purely military solutions; it can be curbed not with ever increasing repression but with a more equitable distribution of wealth, more democracy and more freedom, and
5. For the economy to get going once again, the workingman must be given his just and rightful share of his labor, and to the owners and managers must be restored the hope where there is so much uncertainty if not despair.
On one of the long corridors of Harvard University are carved in granite the words of Archibald Macleish:
“How shall freedom be defended? By arms when it is attacked by arms; by truth when it is attacked by lies; by democratic faith when it is attacked by authoritarian dogma. Always, and in the final act, by determination and faith."
I return from exile and to an uncertain future with only determination and faith to offer — faith in our people and faith in God.
(Ninoy Aquino was assassinated at the Manila International Airport on August 21, 1983 before he could deliver this statement.)

This Used To Be My Playground
After years of completely ignoring the call of dipping my feet at the hard court, I’ve played my first full court basketball game again last night. The court didn’t change at bit but the players did significantly. The moves are still there but they came seconds later after the mind was done processing the next coordinated shift. The spirit is still over eager to reach the air but the legs just can’t give enough lift to power a backboard tap or a shot block. Age has slowly showed its toll on the man who used to spend his hay days at the basketball court.
Fifteen years ago in summer, my friends who eventually became my super friends until now, won our 3rd Championship Trophy in a local league organized by the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) of Maangas. It was a Grand Slam for us friends, and our team - "Brat Pack", which later on became our group’s official street name. The latest victory we had back in 1995 was the sweetest of all victories having won it at the expense of a powerhouse team lead by kumpareng Aldous and Mac Frondozo. We were down by as many as 20+ points entering the second half, yet we managed to pull a come-from-behind win and claimed our Grand Slam trophy.
Brat Pack is composed of Dan Hilo, Jay Cuadro, Tiw de Vera, Tommy Teoxon, Emer Villanueva, Er Villareal, Vince Jardin, Glen de Mateo, Mark Pante, Roderick Royo, Salvador Royo, Ibo Canillo, August de Vera and me. We were heading to our Fourth Championship Trophy in the summer of 1996 but the group decided not to play in support of my SK Chairmanship Bid. I won the election but it also signaled the end of our basketball “career” as a team. As a group and as a team, we didn’t play any basketball game during my incumbency as SK Chairman.
The game last night was a reminiscent of the good old days where the basketball court has been literally my playground. The days where making shots were a product of creative rhythm and some slight acrobatic maneuver. Gone are those days I must say. Going up and down the court had be catching for my breath and holding my knees in a sign of exhaustion in just 2 minutes of the game. My second wind came in moments after that. I felt extra relieved of the exhaustion and started taking and making shots. Few shot I would say are products of sheer luck and the rest are out of the remaining tiny amount of confidence in taking jumpers and lay ups. The turnovers are given and the rebounds are a plus. I’m not a good rebounder in my prime but can snatch a ball in mid-air when need arises, but I’m not looking forward to doing it again now, not that I don’t want but I honestly can’t.
My body aches enormously when I woke up today. But as Rihanna and Eminen would phrase it, “Just gonna stand there and watch me burn, but that's alright because I like the way it hurts”. I love the body pain I’m feeling today. It reminds me of the joys in playing basketball. Before I became a fan of Dwayne Wade and James Yap, the basketball court used to be my playground. The competitive nature of basketball had a part in molding me into what I am today. A Brat Pack in nature and an athlete by heart.

Take Two: Enchanted Kingdom
For the second straight year now, STI College Naga students have reached the Grand National Finals of the Battle of the Bands, Hataw Sayaw and Miss STI Beauty Search to be held at the Enchanted Kingdom on August 27, 2010. After successfully outperforming their counterparts from STI College Legazpi during the Cluster Meet last Saturday, STI College Naga emerged on top of the medal tally with three Championships against the two of STI College Legazpi for the Pop Idol and Mister STI.
The group of ragtag musicians all on their first year in college, Jules Bedural, Peter Boreta, David Pavia, Patrick Angeles and Vince Gabuyo, collectively known as Noise Box performed “Umagang Kay Ganda” a song originally performed by Pops Fernandez and decades later popularized by Bamboo. The incredible voice and style of Vince Gabuyo has earned him the mark as the Bamboo of Naga with the face of Chito Miranda.
2nd Avenues’ Raymond Martin, Maribel Contado, Edgar Delmiguez, Jason Apring and John Morales electrified the stage in the Hataw Sayaw segment of the event. Their counterparts from STI College Legazpi gave them a tough fight in the beginning but the artistry, coordination and choreography of the group propelled them to garner 91.4% from the Judges as against the 85.8% of their rival. The victory is ever more sweeter for the groups’ freestyler Edgar Delmiguez, as he was celebrating his birthday on the same day, the championship trophy according to him is the best birthday gift he has ever received.
The pride of Travel and Tourism Service Program, Wendy Pan ruled the Miss STI Pageant. She literally took home all the minor awards from the production number to the evening gown competition. She was the hands down choice for the Miss STI Award. Wendy topped all five judges and accumulated an 88.4% approval rate against the 82.8% of her STI College Legazpi counterpart. Joining Wendy in the National Finals is STI College Legazpi’s Jose Bosch, a natural heartthrob and the runaway winner in the Cluster 9 Meet. Together, the duo will try to outstand their other National Competitors as they begin their quest to give Cluster 9, the Bicol Region, with its first Mr. & Ms. STI Grand National Finals Title.

Tattooed On My Mind
Maybe you’ll soon forget about all
Or maybe you’ll miss it like I do
One thing’s for sure, I’m all knocked out
I spend too much time thinking of you
And I can’t get you out of my dreams
Now I know that you’re the dangerous kind
And your smile is tattooed on my mind
And I can’t get you out of my dreams
I don’t wanna write
I don’t wanna call
I would not know what to say
It should be you
That’s how I want it to be
Tell me you feel the same way
Oh yesterday I was feeling safe
All I do today is try to be brave
And no melody can seem to soothe my mind
Now I curse you for being so sweet and so kind
Yes I know you’re tattooed
On my mind you’re tattooed

The Yoga Factor
STI College Naga’s participants to the Cluster 9 Competition scheduled tomorrow at Lolo’s Bar and Restaurant were introduced into a different kind of battle preparation. A training that goes beyond the conventional and rigorous repetitions of steps, but rather an exercise that instills physical discipline while nurturing the power of the human spirit. Yoga.
Yoga is a scientific system of physical and mental practices that originated in India more than three thousand years ago. Its purpose is to help each one of us achieve our highest potential and to experience enduring health and happiness. With Yoga, we can extend our healthy, productive years far beyond the accepted norm and, at the same time, improve the quality of our lives and reach our specific goals.
The primary purpose of having the contestants exposed to the Yoga experience is for them to reflect among themselves the purpose of being part of the STI team. The exercises and meditations embodies the search for a deeper meaning on ones existence and purpose in life in relation to the goal set for tomorrows battle, win Cluster 9 and conquer the Nationals. Only by understands who we are, what’s expected of us and what we intend to do in return, that we will be able to see clearly the value of what we have reach thus far. The battle is not yet over; we still need to stick to the team to finally win the war.
None of us can really claim that the rare preparation we did spells highest winning accuracy. But by the nature of Yoga both as a discipline and as an exercise that transcends the attributes of the human spirit, it is by ACCEPTING the challenges that we overcome the test and it is by BELIEVING we can be victorious that victory is achieved.

The Stress of Staying Stressed
A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked, “How heavy is this glass of water?”
Answers called out ranged form 20g to 500g.
The lecturer replied, “The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I’ll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you’ll have to call an ambulance. In each case, it’s the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.
“And that’s the way it is with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on.
“As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we’re refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.
“So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you’re carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can.”

The Last Giant MVP
James Carlos Yap will forever hold the distinction of being the last Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants' Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). With the ballclub bidding the PBA farewell couple of days ago, James Carlos Yap bagged his second MVP Award tonight in the Annual PBA Leo Prieto Awards held at the Araneta Coliseum. Just like his first MVP award four years ago, the award came equally sweet for the 28 year old native of Escalante, Negros, they called by numerous monikers, as he has to battle paramount family issues highlighted by his much publicized break-up with the sister of the Philippine President.
James Carlos Yap is one of the only two Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants players who earned the MVP award while playing for the team. The other is the Captain Lion Heart, Alvin Patrimonio who has four (4) MVP awards tucked under his belt. Collectively, these two players are the only Purefoods TJ Giants players that took home the highest individual award in the PBA and no one could ever join their exclusive class for now, not unless PTJG stage a comeback opening the opportunity for other players to join their elite club.
Picked second over-all back in the 2004 PBA Annual Rookie Draft Pick held January 16, 2004 at Glorietta Activity Center in Makati, this University of the East (UE Red Warrior)skipper didn’t made that much impression on his first year in the pro league. Averaging only 12.3 point-per-game on his first season, James Carlos Yap played his first PBA season being bothered by his ailing shoulder which tremendously affected his shooting touch, and eventually his game. He lost the Rookie of the Year Honors to Rich Alvarez, a former Ateneo Blue Eagle who was playing for the defunct Shell Turbo Chargers.
In his second season in the PBA, James Carlos Yap proved everyone else that there’s no such thing as sophomore jinx. On that year, Big Game James lead the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants to the PBA Fiesta Conference First Runner-up finish and went on to lead the squad and grab the Championship trophy in the succeeding PBA Philippine Cup or better known as the All Filipino Conference. For his effort, he earned his first MVP award from a tightly fought statistical battle with his teammate Kerby Raymundo and nemesis Enrico Villanueva of the Reb Bull Barako.
Worthy to be mentioned in James Carlos Yap’s sterling basketball career which earned him numerous awards since his amateur days is his best friend and teammate Paul Anthony Dy Artadi. The Paul Artadi and James Yap backcourt tandem can be traced back into their college days at the University of the East while playing at the UAAP. Paul “Kid Lightning” Artadi is the man that almost always has given James Yap the opportunity to look good with his amazing passing skills. The duo brought this familiarity advantage over at Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants where they played together for numerous seasons. Ironically, James Carlos Yap earned his two MVP awards in the PBA while playing alongside Paul Anthony Dy Artadi.
These accolades and awards being given to James Carlos Yap and the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants squad will soon be lost in oblivion. When the new PBA season begins late this year, the team will have a new head coach and a new team name. Between then and today, nothing’s really certain with the players and the fans watching at the sidelines. Seeing James Yap and Paul Artadi wearing different jersey than the ones they have always worn six years now may not be a pleasing sight to see on TV. My heart will still cheer and root for the old Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants Squad, saying so is short to admitting that my basketball passion will never be the same again. Only time will tell, for better or worse, one thing is sure, shit really happens!
Congratulations James Carlos Yap! The man with a million moves.

The Long Wait
The long wait will soon be over for Bicolano youth who wanted to experience complete real life college education only STI can offer with the imminent completion of the new, bigger and better STI College Naga Campus. Located at the Central Business District II of Naga City, the new STI College Naga Campus boasts state-of-the-art facilities in Hotel and Restaurant Operations, Tourism Management, Engineering and Information and Communications Technology programs. After 9 months of intensive, scrupulous and round-the-clock construction operations, the new campus is set to formally open October of this year.
The new, bigger and better STI College Naga Campus project was propelled by the consistent enrollment increase of the Institution since new management took full control of its operations back in April of 2007. Aligned with the grand vision of its President Atty. Monico V. Jacob, to transform all STI campuses from the conventional rented buildings into having their own buildings and campuses, the new STI College Naga campus is an intense manifestation of the Institutions commitment to deliver the highest degree of Academic instructions by providing a more conducive learning environment.
Cited by no less than the former City Mayor of Naga, and now DILG Secretary Jesse M. Robredo, for contributing greatly to education development in the City by raising the standards of Academic Excellence especially in the fields of Information and Communications Technology, STI College Naga has been commended by the then City Mayor in his Letter of Appreciation send to Atty. Monico V. Jacob last June of the same year.
Close to seven hundred students enrolled in various Businesses, Engineering and ICT programs of the Institution shared the same degree of eagerness, enthusiasm and anticipation as they await their official transfer to the new campus in a month time. The towering 4-storey building along the CBD II access highway will soon be the new home of STI students of current stature and the many that are yet to come in the very near future.
The long wait will soon be finally over. Bicolano youth need not go the distance to complete their Collegiate Degrees, STI College is already here at the hub of education in Bicol, the Heart of Bicolandia. Now that STI has raised the bar of academic standards, education for real life has found itself a new meaning. Education for real life is a choice. Academic excellence is must. STI College Naga provides both.

Goodbye Purefoods..
The bad news hit the newsstand this morning. Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants, one of the most popular team in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) will not be returning to action as a team in the next season of the PBA. The team which I have followed and have been a disciple of since the day I learned to play basketball will be saying goodbye to its millions of fans here and around the world. The team that brought us legendary players like Jerry Codiñera, Jojo Lastimosa, Nelson Asaytono, Glen Capacio, Dindo Pumaren, Ronnie Magsanoc, Rey Evangelista, Alvin “The Captain” Patrimonio (one of the two players in the PBA history with 4 MVP Awards)to Kerby Raymundo, Paul Artadi and James Yap, has played its last game August 6, Friday against Talk n Text which they lost. What a way to end their 22-year illustrious history, winner of 12 PBA Titles, Abrupt and rude.
Purefoods Hormel Corporation has been under the umbrella of San Miguel Corporation since 2001. Prior to that year, Purefoods Corporation was part of the Ayala Group of Companies. Ayala bought the franchise of Tanduay in the PBA thus paved the way for the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants Team to enter the PBA in 1988. The team has made several team name changes while in the league as part of their tactical marketing campaign to boost other Purefoods products. Among the them are Coney Island Ice Cream, Purefoods Oodles, Purefoods Corned Beef, Purefoods Carne Norte, Purefoods Chunkee Giants and the Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants team they have now.
Early this year, San Miguel Corporation announced that they are selling their Purefoods Entity. Among the interested buyers are the Gokongwei Group of Companies Universal Robina and Unilab Corporations. Today, it has been announced that Butch Campos' Del Monte Pacific Ltd. and Ricardo Po's Century Pacific Group of Companies won the bidding. And today, the new owners stressed that they are not interested in fielding a team in the PBA.
On the business side of things, the new owners of Purefoods Hormel Corporation have seen the current significant market share of Purefoods at 63% in the food industry, hotdog sales in particular. This share simply means that Purefood Hotdogs is lording it over the other players in the hotdog industry as they have to contend over the 37% remaining market share. The bidding cost which was not revealed to the public surely involves significant amount of cash and the new owner intends to recover them fast without the need to invest in a PBA franchise. A force-field business strategy of cutting down expense and putting more pressure on sales to recuperate ROI the least possible time.
The PBA will never be the same again without my favorite team on it. The players may be there but the concept of them playing in another uniform is something that we fans must learn to accept the soonest. Choosing players to play for a particular team is like a car choosing for it ultimate driver. As Bobby Bolivia of the Transformers Movie would say it; “A driver don't pick the cars. Mmm-mm. Cars pick the driver. It's a mystical bond between man and machine.” Same goes with a basketball team and their fans. There’s a mystical bond between teams, players and fans that goes beyond basketball games. That is something that we all, fans of Purefood Tender Juicy Giants, will have to search for as we begin a new chapter of PBA without a team.
2010 is becoming a strange year for me. I have lost and let go of things that are so important to me. And as if the irony isn’t over yet, here comes the news of Purefoods Tender Juicy Giants saying goodbye permanently. What’s next? Bring it on!

Honesty is the best policy?
Not even close. While little boys need to lie all the time, real men realize that anything in excess is a recipe for disaster and that includes telling the truth. With the most obvious questions like, “Does this dress make me look fat?” all the way to “Do you think she’s pretty?” the concept that absolute honesty is the key to a relationship is lunacy. But you may wonder what questions to answer honestly. Wonder no more -- remember that here your honesty is not only welcome but expected. You’re in the company of men and that’s the truth.
Be honest about questions that will lead to embarrassment
Keep in mind that she knows the dress makes her look fat or that her speech for work is terrible. However, she’s passing the bad guy duty off to you. Well, take it. Keep in mind that you don’t want her going out there only to get ridiculed or embarrassed. Be honest but don’t be a giant tool about it. Be straightforward but remember pissing off your girl is not a smart move. Being honest with her (like: “That dress doesn’t flatter you, but you work that short black one”) may get you props and laid in one move. Lying, though, will come back to bite you when she hears, “Why did he let you wear that?” from some skank at her job.
Be honest about questions that will keep her game up
When she asks if you think some girl is pretty, be honest. Say “Hell yes.” Why? Because, one, she knows you think the other woman is attractive; and, two, if you lie, she’ll come back with “I’m secure enough to hear if you find someone pretty… blah blah blah.” Telling her that other women are always attractive reminds her that you’re not some whipped puppy dog that’s mindless and blind. It reminds her that you’re a man with options and you choose to be with her while she keeps her game up, her skills tight and her body good.
Be honest about questions that keep you from cutting them off
If she says: “Would you mind not going out with the guys Friday so we can spend time with my mom who I just saw yesterday?” You say, “Hell yes.” If she says: “I’m going to that baby shower on Saturday, what time can we leave?” You say: “Have a nice time, baby, without me.” These types of questions are laid out to slowly emasculate and dethrone you as a man with a mind of his own. Answering these questions are steps in building what can and cannot be expected of you. You draw the line in the sand and remind her that you’re a man.
Tell the "TRUTH"
Those who recommend complete honesty live in a fantasy land. We know the truth: Absolute truth is an absolute disaster. Remember that only little boys lie all the time; men wield honesty like a scalpel.

Love and Risk Management.
I've learned some things about risk recently and so I'm writing about it, how it applies to life.
Investing involves a lot of risk.
But as you know, life itself is big risk.
So as we continue life knowing that we are about to face high levels of risk,
we should continue investing too.'
I should say loving, being a major part of life,
is a Big, Hairy, and Audacious Risk.
So i made an analysis on what people usually do due to risks of loving,
based on some important strategies that my trainer taught me.
Strategy 1: Risk Avoidance - Does this mean i should give up loving?
Pwede. I never had a special someone for some weeks now :)
And technically, i had stopped loving.
I avoided love.
I avoided the risk.
And right now, i have this feeling of emptiness :p
So i should say, lets scrap strategy number one.
Strategy 2: Risk Retention - This means accepting the loss when it occurs.
It simply suggests that we should love wholeheartedly and pre empt that we will lose it eventually.
We should give up everything for that one person
because, it is, love. Hopeless Romantic, hoping for a serendipity-turned-forever
drama, where shattered lives are found as an end result.
And this strategy tells us that we should
just accept the times that we lost our love ones when that time comes.
Plain acceptance of hurt.
Weep.
Be shattered.
And rise up again.
So traditional, but a possible course of action.
Strategy 3: Risk Transfer - Causing the other party to accept the risk.
A very good example of this, in real estates,
is insurance policy.
In quick thinking, i got what this strategy suggests,
particulary in love: Reserve. This strategy involves:
1. Loving 2 or more people at the same time,
for an obvious reason that if one relationship fails,
you had prepared a contingency measure. A fallback.
2. Loving another person when you feel that your present relationship might
crash any moment. A pre empted rebound.
Strategy 4: Risk Reduction - Minimize Risk. 'Be a minimalist', to quote somebody.
This strategy can be portrayed by the function of sprinklers,
that is primarily designed to minimize risk of losing office assets by fire.
Investment Managers would often recommend this strategy to
protect their individual assets.
Well, as for me, this strategy is contemporary yet most effective.
It is relationship preservation.
It is implementing preventive measures to keep a healthy relationship.
It has the "sprinkler" function to minimize the
risk of unsuccessful relationship.
Remember important dates/anniversaries/birthdates.
Know his friends.
Send her a card.
Send him roses.
Give her chocolates.
Give him a massage.
Talk to his mom.
Give a picture collage.
Set dinner with her boss.
Cook a special dish.
Hug him tight for seconds.
These are just simple things that
would matter to him and may rejuvenate the love
that you had.
Surprise him everyday.
Be a one minute manager.
Strategy 4 works best for people who are in a relationship now.
But since im not into it right now,
im turning the switch on for Strategy 2 :)
So no matter who you
are, take the risk of knowing me.
I'm taking the risk of knowing you too.
Wala lang...kyut no? :)

The James and Kris End of the Story?
Does it really have to be this public?
Yours is not a match made in heaven just like most of the relationships here on earth but do you really need to let the whole world know the infidelities and shortcomings of each if there was ever one? It came from no less than the Philippine Queen of Talk, Kris in her own words said “We stopped loving each other a long time ago.” Then if both of you wanted out of the relationship then do it less the threats and ridicules of your partner. No need to sing “It Must Have Been Love” by Roxette, I loved that song since I was a kid but now that you have used the sanctity of that song in your drama, I ceased to like it already.
When Kris announced on national television that his marriage to James Yap was over, (days after Noynoy Aquino won the Presidency), James was playing a big basketball at the Araneta Coliseum, his team won the game and he and even top scored for his team. His output for that game is short to saying “So what if you’re dumping me?!”
Days later Kris went to the United States to take a much needed rest as she called it. Weeks later, she was back, again James Yap has an even bigger basketball game to attend to on the day she arrived. The team won the game but James Yap wasn’t his usual self that night. He must have been bothered by the news that her “ex” is in town already. Two days after that, he had another do-or-die game against San Miguel Beer, this time, is visible from the sidelines that James Yap has other things in mind. He wasn’t his usual deadly self that night and he even missed two consecutive free throws! Very uncanny for the man with a million moves!
Kris and James, whatever you two have against each other you should settle it privately and urgently. You’re both celebrities but that doesn’t mean everything about you is out for public consumption. Where’s the class? Where’s the finesse that we expect from top rated celebrities as you are? I don’t mind what you do with your own separate lives after your breakup, but you need to maintain the elegance of humanity.
Ayusin nyo yan! Purefoods (B-Meg) got eliminated partly because of that issue! Kung ayaw mo, wag mo! Let’s play basketball and leave show business and hosting to the ladies!

To Angel on Her 10th Birthday
It felt just like yesterday as I waited for you at the lobby of the hospital overnight. In between anticipations and prayers, I promised God to mold you to be the best child you could ever be and me the best father you could ever have. I am failing on the last but you have extremely showed the potential to excel on the first.
Whatever lies ahead of us all, I want you to remember that you are my inspiration in everything that I have done and I have been through. We have survived the ups and downs of life for you have managed to ride and understand the tide at your young and tender age.
You are growing into a fine young Lady and sister to Xavier and Motet. Be the lady that you wanted to be and remain to be the sister that we wanted you to be, sweet, caring, understanding, compassionate and true.
Happy Birthday!
